working with you to provide a green legacy for Guernsey

A letter from The Floral Guernsey Schools' Project

“Thank you for all your help and support with the Floral Guernsey Schools' initiative in conjunction with the Bedell Group Little Green Fingers Schools' Project.

The 13 children from St Sampson's Infant School and 54 from Vale Infant School all really enjoyed their visits and workshops at Queux Patio Plants and encouraged them to have a go themselves at gardening. They were particularly excited by the exercise of forming a human chain to replicate the way strawberry plants can travel. It caught their imagination and helped them to understand how it works. I will forward separately a photo of St Sampson's helping plant out new seedlings in the garden.

The no dig eco garden at St Andrew's Primary School has been another great success. The new concept which replaced the old containers has enabled a much larger number of children to have the opportunity to get involved and has been very productive. The RHS judges were very impressed by the garden and the children's enthusiasm (even in the pouring rain) and a major factor in St Andrew's Parish being awarded a Gold in the Community Competition. I will forward separately notes for your information and photos showing the development and the gardening club with their vegetables. BBC presenter, Alys Fowler, admired the garden on her visit and felt that it was a marvellous way to introduce children to learning where their food comes from and enjoying the fruits of their labours.

The workshops and no-dig garden have been featured in the newsletters and I am sure that lots of the other schools will want to arrange visit and workshops in the new term.

 Many thanks,

Ann Wragg, School's Co-ordinator, Floral Guernsey Council     ”
