A message from The St Peter Port Floral Committee
"We have had on display
in St Peter Port Constables’ Office and the Information Centre for the past few
weeks our ‘Big Thank You Letter’ from the Floral St Peter Port Team. This is to
thank all those companies and individuals who have supported the Parish of St
Peter Port, through its Floral St Peter Port group of volunteer residents, in
this year’s (2010-11) Floral Guernsey/Britain in Bloom competition.
Now, in addition, it is time to say a BIG THANK YOU to Queux Patio Plants and Nigel in person for all your technical advice, your support and your patience and also for sharing all your horticultural knowledge with us, especially in three of our major projects this year.
Living Willow Structures.
Firstly we thank you for your encouragement on our project to build living willow structures in all the St Peter Port Primary Schools:-
Vauvert – a den/bird hide.
Notre Dame – 2 living willow fences and a lunch den.
Amherst – a double twisting tunnel and a den.
Beechwood – a twisting tunnel and a den.
And at Summerlands Residential Home a willow sun shelter for two wheelchair users (described by a delighted Resident as their upside-down crab pot!
And a similar shady den at Wesley Chapel Mother and Toddler Group play area in the Grand Bouet.
Thank you for sourcing, shipping via your ‘Green Legacy Project’ and storing all the willow bundles until we were ready to use them and, as always, for sharing your immense horticultural knowledge with us on this project.
Inspired Planting.
Secondly thank you also to your daughter who, at a moment’s notice, planted up two ‘Poniacs’- traditional fishermen’s willow baskets I had bought in our local auction. We hung these on the railings at the entrance to the Constable’s Office on Judging day. I witnessed the Britain in Bloom Judges leaping excitedly from their vehicle in appreciation. Photos were taken and discussions held on the significance of the baskets to the Parish heritage but ,in particular, the selection and arrangement of ‘appropriate representational’ plants.
Automatic Watering
Finally thank you for all your time experience and support in developing our plans to install in-place watering in the centre of Town. How many people, residents and visitors alike, have enjoyed the subsequent displays at Town Church, St James Chambers and Rue Marguerite, a previous wasteland. Thank you also for assisting us in drawing up our ‘Big Plan’ to install watering systems throughout the Town’s retailing area from the Lower Pollet, through High street and the Market Place to Mill Street and Mansell Street in the Old Quarter. Without your assistance in the technical details, materials and costings we would have been unable to convince Parish Officials, residents and traders of the viability of our Plan.
A Big Thank-you"
from Helen Storey on behalf of the Floral St Peter Port Team-
(Douzenier Mrs Katina
Jones, Deputy Martin Storey, Patrick Johnson and Lesley Perchard)
and from the Constables and Parish of St Peter Port.
